Interestingly enough, this speces of shrinking numbers, was not discovered until May of 1992. Saola are an elusive species that is suffering from a shrinking and fragmented habitat. Hunting also has some effect of the species though fragmentation is the major threat. It is difficult to give real numbers of their population because they are so elusive. The best estimate that can be given is between 70 and 700 individuals, favoring the lower end of that spectrum.

Saola have a very distinctive look. Both males and females have two horns for defense. These horns are parallel (or as parallel as possible in nature) and reach up to 50 centimeters. Saola weigh between 80 and 100 kilograms and are about 85 centimeters tall.

Breeding takes place at the beginning of the rainy season. In Lao, this means April to June. Gestation is probably about 8 months. This, along with other information about the Saola, cannot be said definitely due to such little observation of this newly discovered species.
