Destruction of habitat is the name cause for problems for the Sumatran Tiger. This is a general theme for Sumatran animals. Poaching also affects the Sumatran tiger but does so to a lesser extent. The Sumatran tiger's only true predator is the human.
The Sumatran tiger is 7.2 to 8.9 feet in length; this figure does not include the tail. The tail adds another 2 to 3 feet to the tiger. Males weigh between 200 and 350 pounds. Females are between 180 and 300 pounds.
Tigers are carnivores in the wild. They find their meaty food in the forests and grasslands they call home. For Sumatran tigers, these are all in the Island of Sumatra. Getting food is rather difficult for these carnivores since they prefer freshly killed meat. Tigers fail 90% of their attempts to kill prey. Prey includes fish, crocodiles, fowl, pigs, and deer.

Females give birth to 2 to 4 cubs after a gestation period averaging 103 days. These cubs and mates are the only contact Sumatran tigers have with others. They are generally solitary aside from that. This being said, tigers prefer to avoid each other rather than fight over land. Males are territorial and may not overlap their area with another male. Tigers know this and therefore leave each other alone.
