The Sumatran Rhino numbers at 400 individuals some of who are in captivity. Poaching and habitat loss are major threats to this species. Their habitat problems are not helped by the fact that they live in small pockets of mountain areas.
The Sumatran Rhino is the smallest of the rhino subspecies. They weigh about 1760 pounds and are about 5 feet tall at the shoulders. Sumatran Rhinos have two horns which are, of course, a valuable target for poaching. Their horns are much smaller than their relatives'. The Sumatran Rhino's front horn can grow to 31 inches long while the back horn is commonly no more than a bump These rhinos are also unlike their cousins because of their patches of coarse fur.

Females reach sexual maturity between age 6 and age 7. While do not gain sexual maturity until age 10. Females give birth to a calf every 3 to 4 years. She then takes care on her offspring for 16-17 months before they gain independence. Their lifespan is about35 to 40 years.
